Belo's primary publication, The Dallas Morning News.

Dallas Morning News hiring again?? WTF?

That’s about all I can say after seeing ads for a Dallas city hall reporter and a Dallas ISD reporter at Journalism Jobs, just two months after taking a meat axe to its editorial staff.

Updated "mission statement": Focusing on all news media in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and sometimes beyond. Also, looking at the future of print journalims in its various manifestations. But still ... "picking" on The Dallas Morning News? (Don’t forget to capitalize “The”; the newspaper is as sacred as The University of Texas.) The Dallas half of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is the nation’s second-largest metropolitan area, after Houston, with only one daily newspaper. (Phoenix is also larger than the Dallas side of the Metromess, but it has two dailies; there's a local-focus daily as well as the Republic. Throw in the fact that Belo also owns WFAA-TV Channel 8 (ABC), that to counter that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has a “strategic partnership” with KTVT-TV Channel 11 (CBS) and that Fox being Fox, KDFW-TV Channel 4 must always be taken with a bit of a grain of salt even at the local level, and you don’t have as much media independence as I’d like. (Another good reason for you to take at least an occasional gander at the Dallas Observer. Besides, the Observer offers its own regular critique; why shouldn’t I? Now that I've moved, we just get the Bryan-College Station Eagle; not bad for it's market size, but not worth detailed scrutiny. The Houston Chronicle? If I can't get it for free, it ain't worth my time.
